Gingivectomy
In the early stages of gum disease, non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing may be enough to restore gum health. However, in more advanced cases, a gingivectomy may be recommended. At Black Diamond Dental in Pagosa Springs, CO, Dr. Justin Nylund offers gingivectomy treatment to help preserve your gums, teeth, and overall oral health.
A gingivectomy—sometimes called pocket reduction surgery—removes diseased or overgrown gum tissue, reducing the depth of periodontal pockets where bacteria can thrive. At our office, this procedure is performed using advanced dental laser technology for greater precision, comfort, and faster healing.
Here’s what you can expect during treatment:
A local anesthetic will be administered to keep you comfortable.
The laser is used to gently remove infected or inflamed gum tissue and recontour the gums.
Once the tissue is reshaped, the laser also stimulates healing through a process known as photobiostimulation, which promotes faster recovery.
Following the procedure, you may notice some temporary sensitivity in your teeth and gums. Within a few weeks, most patients experience healthier gum tissue, shallower periodontal pockets, and an overall improvement in oral health.
